An African woman in a man’s world

WH on November 23rd, 2007

In almost every society, women and children are the most vulnerable and that is as true of Nigeria as it is everywhere else. It’s definitely a man’s world. Our grip on life here is so tenuous, the line between life and death so thin, even more so than in developed nations. If you and your family are healthy and you can afford to provide for your family’s basic needs, you give some heartfelt thanks to God.

An African womanThe vast majority of Nigerians and other Africans live a hard life. Putting food on the table is a daily struggle. Sending children to school for even the most basic education involves a lot of sacrifice. The people that have the most children are usually the ones that can least afford to care of them.

Women and children die at alarming rates. A lot of the efforts made at development are usually targeted in urban areas. Unfortunately, the vast majority of the population lives in rural areas.

I can’t pretend to be one of the suffering masses. God has blessed me immensely. I can’t live a life divorced from my surroundings because it hits me at every turn. I can’t move to the village to go and educate the people there. But I will do my best to provide as much useful information about health concerns of African women, and Nigerian women in particular, as I can. I may not reach the people that really need to be reached most desperately but if a few woman can learn something new that they can share with other women, then I will be happy.
